The 2012 Southern Highlands Writers’ Festival took place on Saturday 21st – Sunday 22nd July at the iconic Gibraltar Hotel in Bowral. It featured some of Australia’s greatest writers, thinkers and performers including Leo Berkelouw, Candice Bruce, Jaye Ford, Kate Forsyth, Giulia Giuffrè, Amanda Hayward, Eric Knight, David McKnight, Paul McShane, Mark Macleod, Manisha Jolie Amin, Jan Latta, Annabel Little, Frank Moorhouse, Malla Nunn, Daniel O’Malley, Craig Pearce, Skye Rogers, Kerri Sackville, Emma Scott, Janine Shepherd, Angus Stewart, Katherine Thomson, Kirsten Tranter, Mark Tredinnick and Sue Woolfe.

Saturday 21 July
Mark Tredinnick
One of Australia’s most talented poets, Mark Tredinnick talked to Highlander Paula McLean about poetry in motion. Mark recently won the Montreal International Poetry Prize in 2011.
Eric Knight
Eric Knight is a former Rhodes scholar and economics consultant to the OECD, the UN and the World Bank. He discussed world issues and their possible solutions with radio star Richard Glover.
Was P.L. Travers the real Mary Poppins? - Annabel Little
Annabel Little discussed the author P.L. Travers, a Bowral resident who wrote Mary Poppins and its associated sequels.
Angus Stewart & Skye Rogers
Garden Australia’s Angus Stewart and graphic designer Skye Rogers discussed how they turned their passions into successful careers, with local resident Fiona Probyn-Rapsey.
Katherine Thomson & Craig Pearce
Katherine Thomson and Craig Pearce are two of Australia’s finest writers of plays and films. They were interviewed by theatre critic Charlie Little about the distinction between writing for the page, the stage, and the screen.
Where To From Here Panel Discussion
This panel discussion including Leo Berkelouw, Paul McShane, Frank Moorhouse, Richard Glover, Amanda Hayward and Kerri Sackville talked about the current climate and future of the literary world.
Frank Moorhouse
Frank Moorhouse has written the final book in the “Edith Trilogy", Cold Light. He talked with Lucy Palmer about his work and the conclusion of this series of works.
Literary Dinner
David McKnight & Serge Dansereau
The Literary Dinner with David McKnight and Serge Dansereau took place at the Gibraltar Hotel. Canadian Chef Serge Danseau has also published his latest cookbook, French Kitchen: Classic Recipes for Home Cooks.
Sunday 22 July
Giulia Giuffrè & Annabel Little
Giulia Giuffrè and Annabel Little have both written memoirs about their own fascinating families. Biographer Jeff Apter interviewed them about their process and discussed the style of memoir writing.
Thrillers Panel Discussion
In this panel discussion of authors including Jay Ford, Malla Nunn, and Daniel O’Malley, they discussed the popularity of thrillers as a genre. The session was moderated by journalist Kylie Matthews.
Candice Bruce & Kate Forsyth
Candice Bruce and Kate Forsyth have both drawn on the past to shape their latest works, The Longing and Bitter Greens respectively. Jenny Strachan moderated the session with both of them about the significance of history and how to draw on the past to create present works.
Sue Woolfe
Acclaimed best-selling author Sue Woolfe spoke with Highlander Fiona Probyn-Rapsey about her latest work, The Oldest Song in the World.
Story Time! Panel Discussion
In this children’s literature workshop, Paul Macdonald from the Children’s Bookshop talked with children’s writer and editor Mack Macleod, wildlife photographer and children’s author Jan Latta, and young adult novelist Emma Scott.
Richard Glover
Here in the Highlands, ABC Radio broadcaster Richard Glover built a mud brick house with his friend Phillip and their partners. He discussed his memories of the project with Highlife magazine editor, David Smith.
Manisha Jolie Amin & Kirsten Tranter
Both of the latest releases of authors Manisha Jolie Amin, Dancing to the Flute, and Kirsten Tranter, A Common Loss, focus heavily on the theme of friendship. Local poet Mark Tredinnick discussed this theme of the nature of friendship with the two of them.
Jan Latta
Jan Latta is an author, a wildlife photographer, and a publisher. She reflected on her fascinating and sprawling career.
